The Board of Directors is the decision-making body for the Stanford National Black Alumni Association.  It is a working board comprised of talented and energetic alumni full of Cardinal pride and love for Stanford’s Black community.

  • The Board of Directors shall consist of a maximum of fifteen (15) active members.

  • Each board member serves a 3-year term beginning on January 1st of the year immediately following board election/appointment.

  • If appointed to fill a vacancy, the new member shall serve the remainder of the vacated term.

Eligibility & Qualifications

The composition of the Board of Directors should reasonably reflect the diversity of the current and future Black alumni body. To be eligible for board service, candidates must be members of SNBAA and alumni of Stanford University (undergraduate or graduate).

Qualified candidates will have demonstrated:

  • A strong record of Stanford volunteer service

  • Desire to enhance Black alumni engagement and foster lifelong connections among alumni and the University

  • Passion for Stanford

  • Evidence of leadership

  • Willingness to attend regular meetings and meet the expectations of board membership

Additional factors (e.g., professional experience, class year, geographic location, graduate representation) may be considered in order to complement and strengthen the composition of the board.

Member Expectations
  • Regular attendance at board meetings

  • Execution of assigned and/or expected responsibilities

  • Leadership and/or participation on at least 2 board committees

  • Travel to the annual board planning retreat plus at least one (1) additional SNBAA-sponsored event (e.g., Stanford Black Alumni Summit, Reunion Homecoming activities, Sierra Camp, Stanford Bowl Game activities)


In addition to the responsibilities above, we liaison with Stanford Black Alumni Association regional clubs, collaborate with the Stanford Alumni Association on a variety of tasks, and communicate key information to our members.


The board election process commences in early October with results published in December.

SNBAA Board of Directors Submission Requirements


Those interested in joining the SNBAA Board of Directors for a three-year term beginning January 1, 2021 should submit the following information via email to by October 18, 2020:

  • Personal Statement (detail why you want to join the SNBAA Board of Directors)

  • Stanford Volunteer Record (include any work with alumni groups, reunions, service, etc.)

Josephine Baker, ‘79 – Candidate Statement:

I am particularly interested in activities to increase Black alumni engagement and participation, particularly among more ‘seasoned’ alums and those in areas without a local chapter. My commitment to the community, and my relationships with Black students that may not have felt a strong connection to the Black community while at Stanford give me a unique network upon which to serve effectively on the SNBAA board. Volunteering in NY – a remarkably unique and transient city – has taught me time-tested strategies for keeping alums in unique geographic areas active, which I look forward to sharing.
